Tharu: Madhesi or not

– Vijay Kumar

Madhesis as the name is given to those who live in the Terai region of Nepal. So it should include any person, caste, ethic groups who permanently inhabit in the Terai. Generally we found that only castes title like Yadav, Jha, Mishra, Singh, Sah etc are to be included in the categories of Madhesis. But it is completely a wrong. Some defines Madhesi according to place other in religious color, language, habit etc but this only in to voice of leader while giving the speed between, the people assemble and how they use Madhesis for their own benefit.

Tharu generally nowadays we listen to, that they didn’t accept themselves to be Madhesis. Why this is a prime issue nowadays, who started this and how the whole country is following it. Tharu who lived permanently from east to west of our country’s Terai area. According to the contents of who falls in between Madhesi, those who lived in the Terai are put into Madhesis constituency. Tharu belongs to the native residence of the Terai area that has their how from the time of their ancestor. They have their ancestor history attached with the Terai.

Tharu have their own language which is the bi-product of Maithili language not the Nepali language. Both Madhesi & Tharu uses their own languages for communication between them as they both understand their language quite well. Tharu have their own culture, traditional & societal rule which is similar with Madhesi people. Festival like Dashain, chhath, Maheshakranti, Diwali, Holi etc as well as traditional dress like Dhoti, kurta, gamcha, sari & dressing style are common between them. Taking about societal rule they both fallow same marriage ceremony with slightly changed. The conditions of women, children, in the society of both are almost same. The situations of education, unemployment, poverty, traditional etc are the same with both societies are facing. Also both communities are facing same identity, awareness problem in Nepal.

The natural rules of the environment are almost the same & collapse under the Terai district. As we know that more then 80% of the people of Nepal are dependent upon the agriculture and more then 80% of the agriculture product are grown from this area. So both Tharu & Madhesis are farmers and share common standard of living. Even in the perspective of climate, the both regions have the same. The four flavors summer, spring, winter, monsoon have common effect in both area & to the inhabitants. In field of development in term of roads, infrastructure, employment, opportunity, civilization etc they both allocate common effect in their communities.

In the opinionated concern, most Tharu community people are the parts of Madhesi parties like MPRF, NSP, TMDP etc & giving full support to these parties. This type helping hand progression is also shown in association established by Nepalese Terrain citizens outside Nepal like in India (AIMSA), USA (ANTA) & UK (ANMUK). Jointly these communities are giving their 100% if any need in sort of assistance is needed for their community benefit in Nepal & outside Nepal.

Now, here comes the question, where the Tharu comes? It comes under Madhesis or not. They have their own status and own ancestor history which defines that they are fully a separate ethic group of people. But in all, these all facts and conditions show that they are the Madhesis and they fall under it. The majority of their societal rules & regulations, political situation, economic situation etc are almost with the Madhesh region. Even at number of times people get confused who is Madhesis or Tharu because of the sameness in cooking. (Concluding on the assumption on truth & facts and the given condition Tharu are the Madhesis earlier since the period of their ancestor). Tharu comes under the Madhesis community as likewise Muslim communities, Dalit communities, Rajbanshi communities etc fall under within it.

Tharu said that they are not madhesi….. But I don’t know why, madhesi are trying to make tharu as madhesi. It’s surprising that, at any cost madhesi are trying to make tharu as madhesi.
Writer says that, tharu are madeshi ….bcoz… ” they are madeshi most Tharu community people are the parts of Madhesi parties like MPRF, NSP, TMDP etc & giving full support to these parties…… hahaha, totally crap— what do they call to those tharus who are in NC,UML,Maiost,Tharuhat Parishad,Chure Bhawar etc…
I don;t agree with writer as he presents such non-sense things and compared tharus with madhesi……..

Tharus are neither pahadi nor madhesi.madhesi count them as madhesi but they dont count themselves as madhesi.they want to count themselves as pahadi whereas pahadi count them as madhesi.
they are the most discriminated community by pahadis.pahadis are dominating them since very very long back but still they count themselves as pahadi.since, most of them are illeterate, they are unaware of the fact that pahadis are dominating them.
recently they have raised a new voice that they are not madhesi and they dont support “autonomous madhesh state”..infact they are happy with the way pahadis treat them…since they are illeterate they dont have that much sense to understand thesesthings………

Some tharu leaders might be misleading their community being a puppet of Hilly originated leaders but the fact is they are also victimized by pahade ruling elites(Of hilly origin) time and again similar to those of other residents of Terai.
Today some people of Pahade origin claim to be a permanent residents of Terai and question Mashesi’s authencity of being Nepali citizen. But they need to look back in pages of history ranging from 1810 to present, they will understand how they have become residents of Terai and how madhesis in their own backyard have been made to feel a 2nd grade citizen.
Though this continued for more than 250 years, it has to end, there will be no more monopoly of anybody. we will have to ensure equal rights for all if the harmony of country is to be maintained. The autonomy of madhes is inevitable. If that doesn’t happen politically and diplomatically then obviously the alternatives have to be searched and we are ready to go that far!!!

Tharu was made slave, tharu is still slave and tharu will remain slave if they don’t think now. They can bargain equal status with madhesi but they are neither made capabel to bargain present leaders like “brahmanbad”. They will remain slave of brahman forever if they donot become wise in this turning point. Yes they are right about Tharuhat but they should be confirm that they can rule their territory or not or they would be ruled by NC, UML and maoist where the leaders are same brahmans. “One madhes and one pradesh” might be wrong concept but their rights need to be secured. They should be aware whether present rulers trying to play the game with them to continue their tenure forever.

All Tharu are madeshi . Only some leaders of tharu who take commission from other parties of Pahadi Bramahan so they say that we are not madeshi. Most of tharu who live in terai say that we are madeshi . Our culture are same and few different but not want to say others. All tharu want to their own Territory with madeshi people. Only the weak authority and other power they don’t make it. Most of the madeshi are dominated by Pahadi all the time and generation.Always says that they are dothi and other types of wrong word. Impact of unity in the madeshi community it is impossible after few years it also become possible. It is only predict. There is only welfare for madeshi and tharu when becomes “Terai 1 madesh pradesh” .All fraudy madeshi and tharu leaders cheat the people of madeshi and tharu . only for those cause those types of themes are made from the madeshi and tharu.
All madeshi and tharu ” Madeshi” Struggle , struggle and make it madesh ak pradesh

When madeshi and tharu want to take the facilities of our country and become free .There is only one way to make it “One Madesh One territory”. All the facilities and other services of our country were, are taken Pahadi ( 90 percent) . Only few madeshi and tharu are taken . We madeshi and tharu are weak in front of Pahadi due to the previous accidents all the time we are dominated so please make unity between madeshi and tharu and take our right.

We all madeshi and tharu are “Madeshi”

    Jai madesh, jai tharu

Now we are so backward poisition. All the time we are dominated from Pahadi Brahaman take our possession or right immediately.
