About

Madhesis are a group of People from lower land of Nepal. Madhesis occupy most important geographical location called Terai (or Madhesh) which is most startegic location for Nepal’s economic prosperity and development. Terai is bordering the Indian states Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Uttaranchal.

Madhesis are a group of peoples of diverse culture, multi lingustic, varied color, and vibrant life style. Madhesi is proud in its simplistic and natural life style. Madhesi include different groups – Maithilis, Bhojpuris, Awadhis, Tharus, Rajbanshi and also some smaller tribal groups.

Madhesis are diversly spread across Nepalese geograpy and in Indian soil. The high density of Madhesis is concentrated along the Indo-Nepal border line. Madhesi form 40-50 per cent of the total population of Nepal. Madhesis have immense influence in the growth of country, but the contribution of Madhesi remains less visible. Any change in Madhesh creates the ripple effect in the another aspect of Nepalese life.

The land of Terai is most productive and contribute mostly in the development of Nepal. Due to the ease of availability and accessibility of high quality resources, Terai form the Industrial hub of Nepal. This agricultural bowl (65 % foodgrains) along with the Industry (70-80%) setup forms the vertebrate of Nepal, extending from Mechi(East) to Mahakali(West).

madheshi leaders from different parties are actual GADDAR for MADHESI .
MADHESI PEOPLE MUST CAST THEIR VOTE ONLY TO THOSE PARTY WHOSE CENTRAL PRESIDENT IS MADHESI

I think it’s not right time for any pro-madheshi person to raise their voice which break madheshi unity. If u want to unite madhesh u should write Hindi when u would like to name the languages of madhesh and madheshi.

To be a slave is a crush in today world but this is the fact that we are slave in our own country. It reflects that how unorganised we are. well, the fact is infront of all of us and there is no point to elobrating this. The main concern is how we can be organised and how smartly we can achieve our own freedom in our own country. maoist movement have taught one big lesson that without arms also you can win the battle that means how smartly you move and how much you are dedicated for your goal.
This is the time when all madhesi from the all sector should contribute for there cause, if not now then never!!!!

Nice to see all the views and coments of so called Madhesies who forget that we all are united nepalis. Brothers, don’t differenciate one another in the name of skin colour, race or language. Try to live in harmony, will all the brotherhood, and compete with one another for the good purpose, for the development, for the education. If we start chopping one another into pieces, nothing will remain of us.
Still have time to reconcile, to keep ourselves united, as Nepali.

Madhesi friends please try to understand that it not only a physical war from which people wants to gain something like citizenship, equality in civilian, defence and administrative power jobs. This is very much sentimental war along with the physical in which people are forced to live insulted, ignored and suppresed. Moreover, we are being considered not the real citizen of Nepal living in this country.Such type of descrimation should not be accepted and tolerated in 21st century. Please be united and fight for healthy, moral proud citizen life.At the same time try to make best relationship with India which is our only exit and similar sociocultural values for lives. Please start work harder to prove your abity in our own nation. Thanks

Like dozens of people in this blog, I have been heartbroken to hear and read about the shootings of innocent madhesi brother.

    I agree very much that,

    1. Madhesis are the most hardworking citizens of Nepal

    2. Madhesi population in almost ½ of the country

    3. Madhesi have been treated badly in the history and no credit have been given to them for their share in the development of Nepal

    4. Madhesis still suffer discrimination and prejudice

    5. The current government (all the previous ones as well) failed to recognize this injustice

I urge all madhesis to unite together and fight for their rights. But Violence will not defeat violence. Injustice will not cast out injustice. … It is time for peace.” So please find peaceful solution to this crisis.

I would also like to make a confession:

I am from Chitwan, currently residing in the US. While I was in Nepal I always discriminated Madhesis, I did really bad things, I ate channa chatpat for free, I would cut my hair for free and even beat up anyone of Madhesi accent for no apparent reason. Now in US I learn how it feels to be treated as second class citizen, I know how much a wound of discrimination and prejudice hurts.

To all my fellow Madhesi Nepali brothers and sisters please accept my heartfelt apologies for my past mistake and please forgive me and please let me know if I can be of any help in your fight against discrimination and prejudice.

    I am sorry,

    DS

actualy who is madhesi and madhes ?
where as i know madhes is the word derived from MADHYA DESH.and madhesi is a group of people living at MADHYA DESH.

so why these black skinned people are ignoring other living on the same area?if they are really serious about the problem of MADHES then its not a better way to get solve their problem.only black skinned people are not MADHESI .
remember this is not time to fight for one caste and communitiy.why these black skinned people are fighting for UPENDRA YADAV,and for those JTTM’s leader?
The people who died for their struggle to make MADHES a free territory ,is not a mrtyr bcause they died for their leaders.or we can say they are the victims of bad politics….

NOONE IS GETTING ANYTHING BY THESE BANDA ND STRIKE.
NOONE IS LEAVING TERAI FOR UPENDRA YADAV AND FOR JTTM.

“Madhesi – United We Stand” Admin Notice
This comment is posted by neither madhesi nor pahadi. He is number one cheater. He is staying out of Nepal currently. He is posting his comments using different names like “Dev Narayan Jha “, “Beware Madhesis ” ,”eutaman”, “Kanchan Nepali” and etc. He seems mouth piece of some ideological organization. He can be reached at eutaman@yahoo.com. while making any conclusion please keep all these in mind

    Look you Madhesi people,

You are unfortunate partly because of your skin. It is not Pahades who discriminate but British who ruled your former country, India. When British rulled India, your forefathers fled India fearing they might get either killed or be forced to become white masters’ servants. You were granted asylum status in Nepal because Nepal government was genial. Hence you are in Nepali soil today though you are no indigenous.

Yes, you have been deprived of central government’s policy and decisions. But you should first blame for yourselves. When election, whom did you elect? Gachhedar, Hem Bahadur Malla, Bijay Gupta– all corrupted. You never learn who is to be chosen and it made you fall far behind. You shouldn’t blame only for Pahades.

If you have quality and courage, it’s time to lead the nation. It’s in your hand now. But you should be careful. If you invite cummunal activities, you will be chased away to become refugee in India– someone like Bhutanese Nepalese in Jhapa.

Bhutanese are lucky because they have red skin, are honest and loyal to local people. It is why the US has decided to pick them up to grant US citizenship. But you are not lucky that extent– you are black, cunning and dishonest. This is not my personal judgement, but white people when they ruled India.

If you change your attitudes, maybe you are going to be A class citizen of Nepal. But if you try to become a supporter of Upendra Yadav who is being backed up by BJP, it is sure you will fall another 50 years back.

So I call on– AWO BHAI HO, HAMI NEPALI HOU BHANA. Don’t fight for Madhes, fight for Nepal. Don’t fight against Pahades, fight for democracy and don’t insult only Pahades, respect people regardless of their backgrounds and this is what will help you come on the front.

Try to be a loyal Nepali.

i was born in a remote parts of nepal, on a very height mountain. I moved to terai and stayed there 10 years till i finished my highschool. Life in terai was much better, more hospitals, easier to get to cities and everything was hard as hell up in the mountains. I agree that nepali government has yet to have a good mix to represent terai!

    Hi Kalyan Rajbhandari,

You are one of those pahadi who descriminate madhesi people by saying skin color and other things. It seems that your thinking is very very poor like thinking of other Newar of Kathmandu. SADE KO DIMAG BHAYEKO MANCHHE HARU HO TIMI HARU.

  • 22. binod  |  August 3, 2007 at 7:17 am

i am from nepal but nobody believe me ,why ? ? ?
due to colour of my skin.
so i am proud to be madheshi.

    Dear Friends,

I have always felt that there is a discrimination in Nepal. The scenario has not changed over years. Madhesis are always made to feel as 2nd citizens or sometimes even the authority treats them as intruders. This kind of feeling is never going to help the nation. People should fight for justice and equality, my dear friends please don’t mistake me, I am not talking about the kind of fight maoists or any other terrorists are indulged in. The fight should be to change the mentality of people. We have to be more responsible and we have to think of humanity before we take any step.

  • 25. Birendra Shrestha  |  December 14, 2007 at 8:12 am

yeah ,, long live terai . Long live nepal. We are all brothers and sisters .

I have more frens from terai than from ktm. Sujit kr. Singh, Ratish singh, AMresh man singh, anil kr. karna and such . all of em are college grads and some are professors.

  • 26. Birendra Shrestha  |  December 14, 2007 at 8:20 am

I felt so bad reading the comments posted by so-called “rajbhandary”. I am surprised how narrow your thoughts are brother. No one is madhesi nor pahade – we are all nepali . Do not try to differentiate us on the basis of where we live. All we people from terai to himal are nepali.

  • 27. Birendra Shrestha  |  December 14, 2007 at 8:21 am

I am proud that half of my teachers who taught during my school life are madhesis and I am their proud student.

  • 28. Birendra Shrestha  |  December 14, 2007 at 8:25 am

i wanna hear from all you brothers and sisters @ br_np@hotmail.com or at this blog page

  • 29. anu  |  January 4, 2008 at 7:41 am

when madhesi people in this form say rude stuff about pahade, it reminds me of how immature and low down their thinking are. These people are just proud that they had their madhesi teacher or professor, who also are anti-pahadi. shame on you guys!

  • 30. anu  |  January 4, 2008 at 7:43 am

hi raj, your thinking is very inferior. these people just hate any pahade and that’s why all the pahade in terai are ransomed by madhesi. still these madhesi are saying pahadi are bad, when they go and rip pahadi and get money from them and even kill them.

  • 31. anu  |  January 4, 2008 at 7:46 am

i think all these madhesi in these forms don’t have peace of mind. if they were to have peace of mind, they wouldn’t talk like this……and it’s funny how they go and post the picture of lumbini (buddha’s place) in one of their sight, when they are all confused about what a peace really is. i really do’nt like madhesi personally because of their deep rooted hatred for pahadi. i have seen even highly professional people have negative feeling for pahadi. it is sad that nepal is deteriorating day by day not due to maoists but all these madhesi, who are good for nothing.

  • 34. Sujit Kumar Thakur  |  February 1, 2008 at 6:17 am

    Dear Anu,

I have read your comments and I am not at all surprised by your thoughts. It is very easy to blame but hard to realize the truth. The comments in this forum from different people might have given you a feeling that madhesis are anti-pahadi or anti nepal. But that is not the fact, it is true that there has been countless incidents of descrimination for madhesis in their own backyard. Those events have given a bitter feeling in Madhesis’ hearts, how will you feel if you would be treated as an outsider in your own house?? So kindly try to understand the grave problem our nation is facing before reacting provocatively.

  • 35. ram kumar giri  |  February 21, 2008 at 7:58 am

could u guess from which communal i belong by my name?
first of all i would like all to recall that nepal is going through a very crucial and critical period of transition from a rudimentary ruling of so called elites to the rule of people and is not fully complete. Country is not about geography, its about people.there has been mistreating for all those poor people of nepal be it pahade or madhese. i know lot of poor bahun who finds difficult to make their living in daily life while i also know a lot of elite people in kathmandu who are from madhesi community but is living american life over there .
we shud not deny about the rights what the people in madhes are demanding for but we shud be cautious that we may not loose the precious moment if we talk about communilaism and give our chance in hands of those power hungry people who damn care about people they only need power for their sake in any means .they can use any slogans for that.

  • 36. neetu Singh  |  March 3, 2008 at 3:32 pm

    Hi all,
Its nice to get a forum to voice but any madhesi should not forget that path without destination will be harmfull.I am a madhesi but my frens are from pahade, i learnt manythings from them, i got sense of discrimination when was in school took it as challange and from then i am a leading person in my field.Instead of bouncing to each other think about the unity and learn from each other. They send their women to field to work, their education percentage is high, they have unity if they are in stake but where you all madhesi are.Your girls have to face discrimination and sexist behaviour in your own societ very much,if they go for education you feel insecurity then how will you rise?make your home a concrte fort to fight to others, i am not saying dont do anything or mingle with anybody but think first, dont go for dynosian reason to make others laugh on you.Almost all on whose power you dance think that first…..you eat Neapl’s soil first and if you die and are a true madhesi then will mix in that only so think about the land first….be intelligent and competitive. Some doctors, engineers, teachers etc.form your so called madhes will not do anything difference….learn to be nepali .

At last we all are in harmony. Lets see what NEW NEPAL beholds.

Everyone ( regardless of race, colour, gender, sexual orientation, etc) now it is time to vote and focus on ECONOMY, EDUCATION and SPORT.

Still not happy, peace or war you decide now. Enough is enough. A broken country can do only so much.

The new book called ‘Madheshi Uprising: The resurgence of ethnicity’ by Mr Kalyan B. Mathema (2011) is a powerful document on the history of Mithila. A must for every Madheshi historian and political analyst. It links Mithila history with central Madhesh rebellion. I recommend it.

    Dear Madhesi Guys!
One question always arise in my mind?
    Are we Nepalese or Indian?
Becoz these Pahadis tease us by saying”Indian” though they know that we r Nepali..not Indians
Then Why do they say so?
Why do they blame us by saying D****?
I think we all Madhesi should protest against those Bloody Pahadis who thinks they are only real Nepali?
If We don’t protest, then One day we all Madhesi may loose Our Prestige nd Identity
    Jay Madhesh

I think, at present political circumstances in nepal all the madhesi party’s have to co-operate each other and move ahead to do something for madhes and madhesi.

Awesome blog! Do you have any tips for aspiring writers?

I’m hoping to start my own site

WordPress or go for a paid option? There are so many choices out there that I’m completely

overwhelmed .. Any suggestions? Bless you!

    HI! I am Sam Karna
I appreciate all my friends for showing support.
First thing i wanna say that, now when we madheshi borhters have initiated movements for our rights and protest against discriminations…pahadis are in great fear. Now they are saying that we all are nepali, either madheshi or pahadi, we are brothers. But why dont they think in the same way when they call us dhoti and bhaiya. Whenever they come across any madheshi they starts communication in hindi. And they still humiliates us by using these words for us even in kathmandu. And in hilly districts, pahadi used to call deshi to madheshi.
So my fiends we’ll have to fight for our rights and to make our own identification and let the world know that …we are madheshi ..n proud to be a madheshi
    Jai Madhes….

EPAL and madheshi people r real NEPALI.DO NOT FORGET THAT THERE IS THE VAST EXPLANATION OF MATHILI CULTURE IN NEPALI HISTORY.

    jay madhesh,
i i love janakpur bcs my mother land

  • 64. Ram Kumar Yadav  |  July 9, 2014 at 12:10 pm

Madhesi are the Nepali People. They should only speak their mother tongue. Hindi language is not our mother tongue language and it is directly affecting Madhesi culture although we are not Indians. Now it’s time to develop our mother tongue languages such as Bhojpuri, Madhesi, and Bajika to unite Madhesi people. We all Nepali, we all Madhesi.
Hindi language should be stopped and probhibited in Madhesi society to protect the culture and develop the lifestyle of Madhesi. They should only speak mother tongue and National languages.

In madesh, half the population is non-madeshi. Now, i sense some propaganda here. People should leran to differentiate between geographic habitat and ethnic culture.

  • 68. Saroj  |  December 29, 2015 at 12:01 pm

What is the ideology of Madhesi morcha…? First of all group of leader to announce that. People should know that first. 2nd you are in blockaded madhes for last four year which making the people going 10years back. People are being killed. Do you leader announced any fund to them …..no no..no. Then why you madhesi leader bringing them into demonstration. In the family there is one son who is earning money and feeding their family and he is killed in participating your march or what you call demonstration. Now tell me do you madhesi leader has any fund to provide them..?????????

See you are demanding on good point but see back into some thing which is necessary. Kids are not going schools, government work are stuck, bank closed and manymore. We are not grown up too to tackle all these.

If you have guts please bring back all madhesi leader together and plan strongly so that you can get your demand without wasting time. Bring your ideology very clear to the people of madhes as well.
